From the inbox: "Hello!! I am wondering what to do. My husband is in AIT. We got married in September and we already know I will be on his orders when he gets them. He has verbal orders but not written ones yet. I have all his belongings at my parents house, along with mine. But I believe his place of residence is somewhere else. Will the Military move us from my parents house or the other house? And do I have to wait for him to be on leave for the movers to come or Can I have them come when he gets the written orders? Also, does the army usually choose the flight day and time you fly out on if your husband is taking a week leave before you go? I’m very confused about how that all works. Any information helps! Thanks!" ... See MoreSee Less

Amelia Ruththe first thing i’ll say is don’t believe anything until you’ve got written orders. i hate to be That Guy, but when my ex was stationed in hawaii he was originally meant for a duty station on the east coast, it was only in his last 2 days of school that they said “hey, just kidding, you’re gonna go to hawaii now.” it was really crushing because i’d planned so much for this place i thought we’d live and it turned out different! so, keep that in mind. as far as moving you and your stuff, it doesn’t have to be at his exact home of record, i think if it’s like 50 miles within then it’s okay (but i’d have to double check). we were able to have family sign off on our stuff, i can’t remember if we needed a power of attorney, but i know my ex took a moving class before and they sorted that part for him. it shouldn’t be a problem if your husband isn’t there. as far as flight time i’m not certain, we actually booked mine separately (i came a few months after him) and got reimbursed, so that might be an option to take. generally though you’ll get most of your information and get everything taken care of once those orders arrive. it’s frustrating to have to wait, but it will all work out okay. best of luck and i hope you love hawaii!

Stacie Leaver TurkI've done it many times before without my husband. They will come pick up from where you are. Just have to be sure to put your address on the TMO forms as far as pick up location. He doesn't have to be present for them to come. From my experience as soon as you get hard copy orders set up TMO so that you'll be more likely to have them come when you want. Finance usually are who purchases and schedules the flights. When your husband goes to them to set that up he can give them dates he'd prefer to fly out on but it's not guaranteed.

Amanda MarksYou'll have to schedule them so it's possible they won't be available any given day you want, they came about five weeks after we called them bc they were so busy. He doesn't have to be present for the movers but whoever is has to have written consent from him I believe to release the hhg.

Amy FeltonThey'll pick up wherever you ask them to. There may be additional cost if it's a significant distance from his authorized location (duty ststion) we've had a pick up for HHG in two different counties before and it's no big deal.

Amanda MarksThey 'should' pick up your household goods from whatever location you provide them. We had to have the movers pick up our things from a storage unit.

From the inbox: "Hi! I am so happy to have found this group. I will be moving to the Pearl Harbor area in early January to be with my husband and am actively searching for professional job opportunities, preferably in the events field. I have experience with event planning, marketing, and administration. I would be open to anything that would be a good opportunity though! Do you have any helpful advice, jobs that you know of, etc.? I have never been to Hawaii and currently live in North Carolina so I am just trying to utilize as many resources as I can to find something quickly before I get there. Thank you in advance!" ... From the inbox: " Hi! We currently live in Hawaii and our landlord just told us she was wanting to sell the house. So we were going to be looking into military housing because we will only be here for a year and a half more. Currently, we aren’t married but we did have a baby together recently. So we were looking for housing off base so I could get on since I don’t have an ID until we decide to tie the knot! Do y’all have any recommendations? He’s an E6. Also, how is AMR? Any advice would be great! " ... See MoreSee Less

Kate DeYong MioneNo military housing unless you are married. Your BF should know this already especially being an E6. He and your child together could live in military housing but not you.

Rosemary DeLanoPearl city peninsula. Single service members qualify, there's security at the gate but all you need is a drivers license and the address you're going to, lots of non military boyfriends/girlfriends live here. You won't be on the lease, but you can get in and out no problem.

Cristin RacheleHere's the issue...Even if he qualifies for on post housing I'm not sure how that helps you. Your child and he aren't going to want to live in a mil house without you. Unfortunately the army won't allow girlfriends or boyfriends to legally move in (whether it's a house on AMR, Red hill or HMR). It's still military housing and doesn't matter if it's technically on the post or next to it. Also don't forget that there is a wait list for post housing and it can be hard to judge when a property will be ready. I personally would just look for a townhouse or condo and make it easy on yourself during this last year. Hope it works out for you!

Amy FeltonHe qualifies for housing with a dependant. I'm not sure about your eligibility to live in housing. I guess I've never met someone with a live in GF/BF in housing. I do know of people with command sponsored dependants like parents/au pairs/exchange students/and extended family though. So, I don't see why the mother of a service member's child would be denied residence with her child. Talk with your command/housing.

Melissa Sadler GobleHe qualifies for housing because of the child but I don’t think you can live with him unless you’re a dependent or get it approved. I definitely wouldn’t count on it until you ask more questions. You need to speak to the management company where you are looking to live.

Amy Maier-TornbomThere’s Navy housing near and around NEX no gates. Try that area. We’re Army and live in Kapolei so not sure what it’s called but have been to their dog parks when we got here and were in the Hotel Honolulu Hotel across the way. People there said they liked it. You are walking distance to NEX, but seriously don’t walk bcc of the GNAT attacks, it’s disgusting (only on the way just outside of the golf course)....but here’s a Shopette there too and the food shopping center and centered to Honolulu/Waikiki and Ko ‘Olina. For us it was a great location for the hotel even though I had to drive my high schoolers and elementary kids to Kapolei everyday and back until our house was built.

Kayla LaboeI wouldn't suggest getting married only for housing. I'm my opinion if you're not ready to tie the knot there's always another way! Before I married my husband I moved with him to Georgia and we made it work just fine even without the BAH

Nachelle OsorioNo do not run out and get married just to live on post. That is the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Number one reason why military divorces are so high. AMR housing is great. Especially if you can live on top of the crater. Then you get the wind & breeze and a beautiful view of downtown Honolulu. Keep in mind AMR usually does not check ID cards until night time but also they do random card checks during the day sometimes as well. They lock the back gate at 9 or 10 and that is when they start ID'ing at the front gate. So if you are someone who likes to be out and about with your friends and come back at night to try to get on post without an ID you will not be able to get on. Depending on where you're boyfriend works check out Kapolei. There is housing around Schofield as well. And if he is assigned to tripler then check around Salt Lake. That is where Target is. There is housing over there, and also Apartments. Another place to check that is Aaffordable for the BAH he would get for your daughter, is Ewa Beach. Although the drive would not be too much fun if he wasn't tripler. Good luck.

Stacie Leaver TurkIf the child is on as his dependent and it shows that it lives with him he actually can get military housing. And if he's Army & E6 he automatically qualifies for a 3bdrm. Also AMR would be best bet so that she may get on/off with no issues.
