Aloha Teresa, I too live in Kapolei, and also know Lea. It is a great town, and is the up & coming town on island as they are doing a lot of expansion here, with a new mall & restaurants & such. I have 3 kids & really like the schools here. Ewa Beach is another great town. I am a Navy spouse & happen to be a Realtor with Coldwell Banker. if you need help finding a place any where on Oahu, just let me know. Thanks

Please don’t buy into the rumors that there are places that Military shouldn’t go or live on the island…they just aren’t true. We are a Family of 5 and our 3 children were born on the island. We have lived in several different places on Oahu and have never had an issue in the over 10 years we lived there. We were always welcomed and shown much Aloha- you just have to be respectful and show Aloha in return. We got shipped to Fort Stewart back a couple years ago and we were mortified by the amount of crime, especially violent crime there is here and it made us appreciate just how good we had it on Oahu where you seldom hear about murders or drive-by shootings. We are on our way back in a couple of months and it can’t get here soon enough. There are many really great neighborhoods such as Mililani, Kapolei, Makakilo, Kunia, Ewa, Waipio and so many more. Some are pricier than others so you will have to look at your BAH and decide what is best for your Family. Overall, if you embrace the local culture and actually take the time to get out and experience and learn about the island and it’s people you will fall head-over-heels in love with the islands! Good luck!

Aloha Teresa! My family, four kids 10 and under, live in Kapolei. We’ve lived here for five years now and love it! We’ve also had the pleasure of living in Mililani which is another great city to live in. Great neighborhoods, great schools, and close to shopping! I sure hope you find a neighborhood to your liking! Welcome to Hawaii!

We have orders for the first week in December. We were thinking about Military Housing. Are there any places that do not take your entire BAH and if so are they worth even looking at?
Also would you suggest finding a realitor if we want to rent off base or just look at Zillow, Craigslist etc?

      HI Barbie!

There is some Navy housing I have heard that does not take your full BAH but from what I hear you also have to “settle” for something small and that you may not want. Instead of finding a Realtor, I would register and look at AHRN and prepare to be aggressive and ready to sell yourself for a house you want. It was so competitive when we arrived here however we did wind up with a gorgeous house in Makakilo. Good luck to you!

Hey Barbie! If you haven’t heard of forest city I would check them out. We are pcsing next June and we are currently looking into that. It is military communities, you pay rent using bah, tons of amenities, some neighborhoods are for all ranks, some will tell you another community is specially for officers, or junior enlisted. The website is I hope that helps! You may already be settled in now though depending on when you transferred. 🙂

We are moving to Hawaii in the fall and we are wondering what the area of Kaneohe is like. My husband will be on joint base pearl harbor. We have two kids one is school age and we want to her in a good school and we don’t want a bad commute. Any suggestions.

My family and I are PCSing to Oahu this fall with the Navy. We are torn between renting and military housing. Its difficult to find forums to get opinions from people on both sides. We are looking at the Kaneohe for possible rentals. I want to avoid the morning traffic traveling from the Ewa Beach area to get to work on the submarine.
